The two families are unexpectedly bound together by their most precious belongings and the heartbreak of World War II. This later became known as the Horatio Alger myth. Horatio Alger spent the 19th century writing inspirational novels about people living the American Dream by starting out poor, displaying excellent character, and coming across great riches as a reward. These musical excerpts were recorded at a preliminary workshop of Seattle Opera's newly commissioned opera, "An American Dream," with music by Jack Perla and libretto by Jessica Murphy Moo.īased on stories of real people from the Pacific Northwest, "An American Dream" follows the lives of a Japanese American family forced to leave their home, on an island in Puget Sound, and a Jewish woman from Germany who moves in with her American husband. Seattle Opera developed the historically sparked, 90-minute, small-cast work about American dreams, found and lost, through an unusual process of public engagement. The rags to riches story has been used in literature for a long time, but one author made it part of his trademark.
